My name is Brian Merriam. I’m an artist presently based in Los Angeles. I do photography, make music, and most recently have been incorporating mixed media and three dimensional, sculptural elements into my work via a series of novel processes. I’m fascinated by the unknown, the unseen, the metaphysical - the stuff the mystics and the mystery traditions have been after since ancient times. I use scientific equipment to create images of things like plasma, electrical discharge, and the interaction of elements and compounds with the energies of sound, light and magnetism. I like to visit powerful natural places with long spiritual traditions. The work I create in these places isn’t so much ‘about’ them as it is ‘among’ them - as I seek to draw on, and thus allow my work be imbued by, the unique energetic qualities that led to them being designated as sacred or holy in the first place. If, for example, my work brings me to great altitude, I have not come to this place seeking to conquer a mountain. Instead, I desire to be conquered by the mountain, to truly partake of its nature, as it is a divine symbol and thus worthy of reverence. Archetypal symbols, correlations and reflections of the divine can be found across all scales of physical reality. In my work I seek to build a repository of these, small glimpses that allude to the never-ending cycles to which we are bound, a sort of personal reference manual for an ever deepening mystery.
